The courses we offer teach the theory component of refrigeration and they are one part of the total mandatory requirements and preparation prior to anyone challenging a Technical Safety BC (TSBC), formerly known as the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) examination. The design is to prepare personnel wishing to work in British Columbia (and Inter-Provincially where observed) with Industrial Refrigeration equipment at various Plants & Facilities. These include Ice Arenas, Curling Clubs, Cold Storage Facilities, Process Plants and others. This usually includes Operators, Mechanics and Maintenance persons, Zamboni drivers, and Arena Attendants, including staff in the Janitorial fields. Our courses are Approved by TSBC and a prerequisite to writing TSBC examinations. There are other prerequisites, such as Qualifying Time and In-house training, that are required before obtaining the final TSBC certificate. It is best to STEP from the RSA to the IFO, and then to the RO, but that approach is not mandatory. You may begin with either of the courses without taking the previous courses. Qualifying Time (Firing Time) requirements increase with each technology. The RSA A Refrigeration Safety Awareness certificate enables the holder to be able to monitor the refrigeration plant named on the certificate of qualification with a total plant capacity of 1,000 kW or less prime mover nameplate rating. The certificate holder is not permitted to operate or perform any repairs to the refrigeration plant, but is permitted to shut down the plant or initiate safety procedures when specifically trained and assigned to perform such tasks. The IFO An Ice Facility Operator's certificate of qualification entitles the holder to operate an Ice Facility Plant that: does not exceed 1,000 kW prime mover nameplate rating; and has a Refrigeration Operator or a Fourth Class Power Engineer as the Chief Engineer of the plant. It is the WEEK 1 of the Refrigeration Operator’s course. It is a Certificate of Competency Approved by Technical Safety BC (TSBC) and conforms to their standards and syllabus. The RO Formerly known as the 5th Class Power Engineer – Refrigeration Endorsement, this course is now referred to as a Refrigeration Operator’s certificate. It is an Inter-provincial Certificate of Competency Approved by Technical Safety BC (TSBC), and conforms to the Standardization of Power Engineers Exam and Certification (SOPEEC) Syllabus. This course can be two or three weeks in duration depending on your knowledge and previous courses. An RO certificate of Competency entitles the holder to be a person in charge of any type and size of refrigeration plant.
